Join Naturetrek for thrilling pelagic boat trips from Falmouth, where you'll encounter diverse marine wildlife, including dolphins and seabirds.

Recently, I had the pleasure of leading two exceptional pelagic boat trips with Naturetrek Wildlife Holidays, focused on wildlife observation in the stunning Falmouth Bay. Departing on July 27 and 28, 2024, these trips promised an enriching experience packed with fascinating sightings in the vibrant repertoire of marine life.

Vessel and Crew
We boarded the "Spirit of Our Seas," a sleek and newly outfitted catamaran. Captain Keith, known for his expert navigation skills, guided us expertly out of Falmouth’s deep water estuary and into the open bay. His reputation as a reliable wildlife spotter’s echoed throughout the excursion—“If it’s out there, Keith will find it!”

The crew playing crucial roles on these adventures included Fen on Saturday and Alex on Sunday, both equipped with a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm. Their insights added immeasurable value to the experience for all aboard. Special thanks to the crew for their dedication!

Marine Wildlife Encounters
Each trip was marked by heartwarming wildlife sightings, beginning with the charming Harbour Porpoises, spotted close to shore, and Mediterranean Gulls gently bobbing on the wave crests. The diversity didn’t stop there; a few Kittiwakes were sighted, along with the occasional Razorbill or Guillemot, each adding to the rich tapestry of sights.

On Saturday's journey, we ventured southwest towards Lizard Point, hugging the shoreline. This route allowed us to observe Grey Seals lounging on the rocks near Porthoustock and Coverack. As we navigated past the notorious Manacles Reef, the excitement heightened. Our captain remained vigilant for signs of marine activity, watching for 'mix-ups' or 'work-ups' on the horizon, where birds gathered to feed or where tuna and dolphins stirred up the waters in search of small fish.

In Pursuit of Action
When Captain Keith identified a feeding frenzy, it was all hands on deck. We quickly retreated to our seats as he throttled up the engine, transporting us closer to the spectacle. Once nearby, he would idle the boat, allowing us to take in the electrifying situation while avoiding spooking the wildlife. This strategic approach ensured that everyone on board had a chance to witness the action up close.

The thrill of spotting Atlantic Blue-Fin Tuna was a highlight. These impressive creatures, known for their immense size, often encircle their prey, propelling small fish into the air in their desperate attempts to escape. The sight of sprats leaping out of the water was nothing short of mesmerizing.

Seabird Spectacle
Our days on the water were marked by an impressive display of seabirds. The sky buzzed with Gannets, Shearwaters, and various gull species, all eager for their share of the bounty below. The predominant Shearwaters included a mix of Manx, Great, Cory's, and Sooty species. Here are a few photos captured during the trips:

Notable Bird Sightings
Throughout the expeditions, we were fortunate to document various species, including:

- Arctic Skua: Although elusive, one of our group managed to capture some quality shots, allowing for identification.
- Wilson's Storm Petrel: Initially mistaken for a European Storm Petrel, closer examination led us to make a thrilling identification.
- Common Scoter: This flock provided a delightful sighting as they passed by, easily identifiable even from a distance.
Playful Dolphins
Each day highlighted encounters with playful Common Dolphins, which lingered around the boat, providing ample opportunity for photography. Their energetic movements and inquisitive nature made for some unforgettable moments.
