A juvenile Osprey has been spotted frequenting the River Camel, capturing the attention of wildlife photographers with its unique behaviors and feeding habits.

Near Wadebridge, a juvenile Osprey has drawn quite the interest by making its presence known along the River Camel, particularly around the Target pool—a prominent area observable from the Camel Trail at the one-mile mark beyond Pendavey bridge. The bird arrived approximately a month ago and has been spotted roosting in tall oak trees lining the riverbank.

Although initial observations suggested the Osprey was the same one visiting last autumn, distinct differences in plumage indicate that we’re dealing with two different juvenile individuals. The prior Osprey typically migrates to its wintering grounds in West Africa and remains there for at least a year—sometimes two—before returning to breeding territories.

Habitat Appeal and Feeding Patterns
The specific location along the river offers an undisturbed environment, likely attractive for Ospreys during their southward migration. Fish abundance has been evident in this stretch, particularly mullet, which the bird has been seen catching regularly. The influx of weeklong high tides around the equinox likely contributed to a brief surge in fish numbers. However, reports suggest those numbers have recently dwindled, affecting the bird's hunting success.

Photographic Encounters and Techniques
To capture the Osprey in action, I have spent countless hours perched inside a small canvas hide, often during the early morning hours beginning at 5 AM. The goal has been to minimize disturbance, ensuring that the bird remains comfortable and continues to visit its hunting grounds. Remaining undetected is essential; otherwise, I risk scaring away the subject and forgoing valuable photographic opportunities.

Despite the challenge of not capturing images of the Osprey with fish—something other photographers were fortunate enough to achieve—I have been able to document a variety of intimate moments. Watching the bird’s preening rituals or its slow descent into a serene sleep, eyes gradually closing while a third eyelid crosses over, offers a unique perspective on the bird's behavior.

Memorable Moments
One particularly humorous incident involved the Osprey's failed dive attempt: after hastily flying to its preferred landing spot on a dead elm, it misjudged its landing, resulting in the branch snapping away from the trunk. The bird, along with the broken branch, tumbled through the air, creating a resonant crack that echoed through the stillness of the morning. The startled Osprey took off in haste, appearing both indignant and embarrassed. Such moments add to the charm of wildlife photography, showcasing not just the beauty but also the unpredictability of nature.

Creative Endeavors and Future Plans
In addition to my personal documentation, there are exciting plans on the horizon, as efforts are underway to construct an Osprey nesting platform in the vicinity. This initiative will involve repurposing cut-off electricity poles along the river, providing potential nesting sites for future Osprey visits. With any luck, this will enhance the opportunities for photographers and birdwatchers alike, allowing for even closer encounters with these majestic birds.

The journey of photographing wildlife can often be filled with trials, with many long and cold hours spent waiting in the hopes of capturing that perfect shot. Yet, the thrill of witnessing such iconic birds up close is unmatched and serves as a rewarding experience—both for the observer and the camera. Here’s a selection of photographs taken during my sessions, presenting a glimpse into the life and behavior of this fascinating juvenile Osprey.

In the coming weeks, I will continue to observe the river and monitor the Osprey's movements. Each outing provides new opportunities for exploration and documentation, ensuring that wildlife photography remains not just my passion but a continuous adventure. Watch this space for updates on the Osprey’s journey and the impact of the upcoming nesting platform.

Overall, capturing the essence of this bird has been a blend of patience, technique, and serendipity, and I look forward to sharing more images and insights as the migratory season progresses.

With each click, I hope to convey the elegance and resilience of this extraordinary species, encouraging appreciation for wildlife and the environments they inhabit.
