Capturing Urban Kittiwakes: A Photographer's Experience in Bridlington

The Unique Urban Habitat of Kittiwakes in Bridlington

Nesting Kittiwakes in an urban environment like Bridlington may not appeal to everyone, yet for wildlife photographers, it’s a rare opportunity to capture the essence of these seabirds amidst human structures. My journey to Yorkshire from Cornwall was driven by a desire to document these fascinating birds, drawing parallels with the more common Herring Gulls we often see back home. Gulls are notorious for creating messes and raucous noise, but Kittiwakes, with their delicate charm, manage to bring a different energy to the urban wildlife scene.

First Encounters: Documenting Kittiwakes in Urban Settings

My first encounter with Kittiwakes nesting on buildings occurred during a trip to Norway, where I was struck by their resilience in adapting to man-made structures. However, seeing them thrive in the center of a town was a first for me, as I had previously only seen them thriving alongside scenic coastal backdrops. That evening in Bridlington, I set out to capture photographs that would not only showcase Kittiwakes but also highlight their unusual nesting sites, perched against a backdrop of brick and mortar.

Photography Techniques for Urban Wildlife

To effectively photograph Kittiwakes in their Bridlington habitat, I employed a range of techniques focusing on light, composition, and settings. Here are some steps that guided my capture of these seabirds:

  1. Gear Choice: A telephoto lens allowed me to get close to the birds without disturbing them. My choice of a 70-200mm lens proved effective in framing Kittiwakes against their surroundings while isolating them from distracting elements.
  2. Lighting Conditions: Shooting during the golden hour offered soft light that added warmth and dimension to my images. I waited until just before sunset, which also helped bring out the vibrant colors of their feathers against the twilight sky.
  3. Settings: Utilizing a wide aperture (f/4) enabled me to achieve a shallow depth of field, rendering backgrounds pleasantly blurred while focusing attention on the Kittiwakes. I kept my shutter speed elevated (around 1/1000 s) to freeze their movements, especially when they took flight.
  4. Composition Choices: I aimed for a variety of compositions, including shots of Kittiwakes in flight, close-ups of their intricate details, and wider frames that included both the birds and their urban nests. Utilizing the rule of thirds helped create visually appealing images, balancing the Kittiwakes with their habitat.

Photographing the Kittiwakes: A Story of Survival

As I walked through Bridlington, it became evident that each Kittiwake nest told a story of survival. The hustle and bustle of the town contrasted sharply with the serene moments of the birds tending to their young. On one visit, I captured a pair of Kittiwakes nesting on a dilapidated building—an image that represented not just the beauty of nature but also its resilience amidst urban challenges.

Here are a few images taken during my time in Bridlington, showcasing the Kittiwakes’ interaction with their environment:

Parallel Universes: The Natural and the Urban

In contrast to the urban settings of Bridlington, my photography has also taken me to the wild cliffs of Northumberland and the serene coasts of Cornwall. Each location revealed Kittiwakes in varying environments, and yet the base instincts of nurturing and survival remained consistent. The birds thrive on rocky ledges in Northumberland just as they do in the urban landscape of Bridlington.

To illustrate this, I’ve included images from my various encounters with Kittiwakes across different regions:

Conclusion: Reflections on Nature and Urban Life

My photographic journey in Bridlington highlighted the delicate balance between nature and urbanization. The Kittiwakes, with their resilience and beauty, stand as symbols of adaptability. As wildlife photographers, it’s not just about capturing an image; it’s about telling a story and understanding the environment around us. Whether perched on a bustling town center or nesting on rugged cliffs, Kittiwakes embody a spirit that is worth documenting from every angle.
