Experience the incredible encounter with a tigress in Panna National Park, sharing insightful photography tips and techniques for wildlife enthusiasts.

Capturing the Majesty of a Tigress in Panna National Park

During a recent bird photography tour in India, a detour to Panna National Park turned into an unforgettable wildlife adventure. While initially focused on birding in Bharatpur, the allure of tigers drew us to this renowned reserve tucked away in Madhya Pradesh. My friend Hans and I had previously attempted—and failed—to spot tigers in 2003 and 2005 at Bandhavgarh National Park, but this time, our luck would take a different turn.

Thanks to Mr. Laxman Singh and Mr. Ranveer Sikarwar from the Hotel Sunbird, we secured accommodations at the Panna Tiger Resort and booked three jeep safaris, eagerly anticipating what lay ahead. The journey to Panna took about seven hours by taxi, comfortably managed by our skilled driver, Raja Singh.

The First Safari: Anticipation and Patience

Our first foray into the reserve was an afternoon safari, where we searched for signs of the elusive tigers. Despite spotting fresh paw prints and hearing a couple of tigers roar, we returned without a sighting. However, we were undeterred, fueled by excitement for the next morning's early adventure.

A Dawn Encounter

At the crack of dawn, we were out of bed by 5 AM, ready for a 6:15 safari. The chill of the early morning air greeted us as we climbed into the open-top jeep. Our guide, Manoj Dibedi, quickly tuned into the forest's sounds, indicating that a tigress was nearby. Within less than half an hour, we spotted a stunning tigress moving gracefully through her territory.

The lighting conditions were still tricky for photography, but they gradually improved as the sun ascended. I quickly set my camera settings to adapt: using a fast shutter speed to freeze her movements while maintaining a wide aperture to keep the subject in sharp focus against the blurred background.

As the tigress explored her surroundings—sniffing trees and marking them with her scent—the anticipation in the jeep heightened. Observing her behaviors, like the scent-marking displayed in the provided images, adds depth to the understanding of her daily rituals and dominance within her territory.

Masterful Positioning for Photographers

Manoj and our driver showcased their expertise by positioning us perfectly to capture the tigress as she emerged from the dense grass. They skillfully anticipated her path, leading us to prime spots where we could photograph her without disturbing her natural behavior.

Every gentle movement the tigress made resonated in the atmosphere, making our presence seem secondary. Despite being aware of us, her indifference to the nearby vehicle allowed for intimate shots, illustrating her calm authority over her domain.

Capturing a Rare Moment

After a while, the tigress ventured towards a plateau adorned with long, golden dry grass, providing a breathtaking backdrop. This was where we managed to capture stunning images of her in motion. The visual drama of her strides against such a picturesque landscape was a gift for anyone behind the lens.

Throughout the encounter, I alternated between cameras—one fitted with a 70-300mm lens for closer shots and the other with a 500mm lens for wide-angle captures, ensuring I didn't miss any fleeting moments. Effective manual focus and rapid burst shooting made a significant difference here, enabling me to get those sharp images of the tigress as she passed through the towering grass.

A Rewarding Experience

Reflecting on the adventure, it was clear that this wildlife encounter was not just a chance to photograph a magnificent animal; it was a culmination of hard work. The long hours spent traveling, battling mosquito bites, coping with the sweltering heat, and early morning wake-ups proved worthwhile. The memory of that morning with the tigress—her majestic presence and the remarkable chance to observe her behaviors—will remain etched in my mind forever.

As photographers, it's essential to seize such moments, enhancing the skills honed over years in the field. Each frame tells its own story, weaving the experience into the fabric of our photographic journey. Panna National Park had more to offer than we had ever anticipated, steering us toward a memorable connection with nature's most remarkable creations.
