Discovering the Isles of Scilly: A Springtime Journey Through Nature's Bounty

When the Isles of Scilly come to mind, think of beautiful landscapes, unique wildlife, and rugged coastlines. Our journey ran from May 5th to May 12th, 2025, offering an immersive experience that truly embraced the natural beauty and vibrant life of these islands.

Setting Sail from Penzance

We set sail aboard the Scillonian III from Penzance, greeted by stunning views of the famed Cornish coastline. Iconic landmarks such as the Minack Theatre and Longships Lighthouse whizzed by as dolphins danced in the Atlantic waves, and Manx shearwaters graced us with their presence high above. As St. Mary’s came into view, our anticipation grew, knowing we were on the verge of an unforgettable adventure.

Welcoming Atmosphere at the Star Castle Hotel

After settling into the historic Star Castle Hotel, we took a leisurely walk around the Garrison, where vibrant wildflowers dotted the landscape. Birds were everywhere, with blackcaps, stonechats, and linnets providing a delightful soundtrack, complemented by the distant calls of cuckoos. This enchanting atmosphere foreshadowed the spectacular wildlife experiences to come.

As our group gathered, notable discussions arose about photographic techniques for capturing the beautiful surroundings. With a focus on setting up equipment, using varying light conditions, and composing shots, many were eager to document every moment of our journey.

Island-Hopping Excursions

Each day unveiled a fresh escapade, as we visited the unique isles of St. Agnes, Tresco, Bryher, and St. Martin’s. Every island possessed its own distinct characteristics—withered trails along the coast, flourishing bird reserves, and exquisite gardens. One standout experience was our boat trip around the iconic Bishop's Rock Lighthouse, where we were welcomed by a myriad of seabirds including puffins, razorbills, and guillemots.

At Tresco, the renowned Abbey Gardens delivered a spectacular display of exotic plants cascading in vibrant colors. It was here that some participants caught a fleeting glimpse of the rare Scilly shrew, a prize for avid wildlife watchers.

On St. Agnes, the beautiful Big Pool served as a temporary home for an array of migratory birds including shelducks, wigeons, and whimbrels. The excursion was capped with a stop at Troytown Farm, where enjoying their famous homemade ice cream while overlooking an impressive coastal vista created a perfect pause in the day's activities.

Wildlife Sightings and Natural Wonders

Springtime on Scilly heralds a remarkable breath of life throughout the archipelago. During our expedition, we encountered rare bird species such as a second-summer purple heron, a stunning great white egret, and surprisingly, a black guillemot, marking its first appearance on the islands since 2004!

Seals basked lazily along rocky shores while butterflies danced among the wildflower paths, creating a picturesque scene. Unexpected wildlife encounters, like a possible weasel near the steps of the Star Castle, added an air of intrigue and adventure to our quest for nature.

Seabird Spectacles and Farewell Moments

As our week progressed, we found ourselves increasingly absorbed in the natural rhythm of the islands. Quietly observing the industrious oystercatchers on secluded beaches and relishing in the poignant sunsets created moments of reflection that each participant cherished.

When it was time to return on the Scillonian III, the ease of the birds around us made for an unforgettable ride. A particular highlight included witnessing an impressive gathering of over 200 Manx shearwaters near Wolf Rock Lighthouse. As we headed back toward Penzance, participants exchanged glances filled with awe and a sense of gratitude for a journey filled with memories of connection to nature.
