Exploring Somerset’s Wildlife: An Unforgettable June Adventure

From June 1st to June 4th, 2026, Naturetrek invites wildlife enthusiasts to immerse themselves in a comprehensive four-day tour of Somerset's remarkable biodiversity. Offering a unique glimpse into the county's varied environments, the tour encompasses coastal regions, wetlands, woodlands, and grasslands.

Diverse Habitats in Somerset

Somerset is known for its extensive range of natural habitats. The tour will explore the coastal dunes of Berrow, known for their captivating views and unique flora, alongside the expansive wetlands of the Somerset Levels, which serve as a haven for migratory birds and aquatic wildlife. The trip will also guide participants through the ancient oak woodlands of the Quantocks and the limestone grasslands of the Mendips, each ecosystem providing unique opportunities for wildlife observation.

Highlights of the Tour

The adventure begins with a focus on the Quantocks, where participants will have the chance to view the beautiful nesting Pied Flycatchers and listen to the melodious calls of Wood Warblers, adding an auditory element to the trip's visual feast. Moving to Steart Marshes, visitors will encounter a variety of bird species, including the striking Avocets and Oystercatchers, often spotted with their young. Other notable sightings include Greenshank, Redshank, and Little Ringed Plover, making this an exciting destination for birdwatchers.

Exploring the Somerset Levels

The Somerset Levels are particularly abundant with wetland wildlife. Here, enthusiasts can expect to see species like the elusive Bittern, the majestic Marsh Harrier, Black-tailed Godwit, and Great Egret. The varying weather throughout the tour, from sunny patches to overcast skies, influences wildlife activity—sunshine tends to spur dragonflies into action. Look out for Four-spotted Chasers and Blue Chasers (also known as Scarce Chasers), flitting over the wetlands, alongside sightings of Grass Snakes basking in the warmth.

Flora and Insect Life

In addition to impressive bird sightings, the wildlife tour spotlights the rich plant life and insect populations that flourish in Somerset. Participants will explore places like Berrow where Southern Marsh and Bee Orchids thrive. Ivythorn Hill promises an impressive display of orchids, including Pyramidal, Common Spotted, and Greater Butterfly Orchids, alongside numerous Common Twayblades. The biodiversity in plant life provides a mosaic of colors and textures, enriching the photographic opportunities on the tour.

The Final Day in the Mendips

The final day of the tour takes participants into the breath-taking Mendips. As the weather improves, an array of wildlife can be discovered around Blackmoor Reserve and Nether Wood. Expect to observe Redstarts, Stonechats, as well as vibrant butterflies and dragonflies. The landscapes here offer an assortment of habitats in close proximity, making it a prime location for diverse wildlife sightings. To cap off the day, a walk through Velvet Bottom leads to memorable encounters, including a basking Adder, which often delights those on the tour and makes for striking images.

Photography Opportunities

Throughout the trip, participants are encouraged to document their experiences. The mix of landscapes, from wetlands to woodlands, coupled with a variety of species, enables photographers to capture stunning imagery. Whether it's a close-up of a Grass Snake or an expansive view of the Mendip hills, each moment presents the possibility for unique perspectives. Here are some stunning photographs from past tours:
