Exploring Ray Metzker's "City Lux": A Masterclass in Street Photography and Abstraction

“A fine blend of street and abstract”

While my passion lies in both landscape and street photography, I've recently felt the urge to delve deeper into environmental portraits. However, my busy landscape workshop schedule has made it a challenge to pursue this interest. To reignite my creative spark, I often turn to photographic literature for inspiration, revisiting the works that initially drew me to this art form.

During my recent search for new photography books, I eagerly obtained City Lux by Ray Metzker. This title had been on my radar for quite some time, especially given that Metzker's previous publications have long been out of print, often leaving collectors to pay a premium for their copies. What stands out in Metzker's work is its unique fusion of street photography with abstraction, offering a fresh perspective on urban environments.

Cover of City Lux

Upon first glance at the cover of City Lux, one might initially perceive merely a collection of abstract shapes. A closer look reveals a stunning contact sheet, showcasing a series of images captured from the same vantage point. Each frame is distinct, featuring different subjects that walk through the beams of light, underscoring Metzker's meticulous attention to detail and timing.

Metzker's artistry embraces the interplay of shadow and light. His photography often shrouds details in darkness, imparting an air of mystery that draws the viewer in. He skillfully manipulates highlights, tending to bypass mid-tones. This technique reduces scenes to their structural essence, allowing the viewer to focus on the composition of light and form.

This book is a compelling study in the balance between planning and spontaneity. Metzker mastered the art of recognizing locations with lighting potential, then spent time waiting for the perfect moment when subjects graced his frame—demonstrating a remarkable combination of premeditation and chance. The contact sheet encapsulates this pursuit, showcasing moments in which the urban landscape and its inhabitants converge.

Example of Metzker's photography

Studying City Lux serves as an educational resource for photographers interested in maximizing their use of space while embracing the unanticipated. Metzker's work blurs the lines between street photography and abstract art, pushing viewers to contemplate the forms and patterns embedded in everyday scenes.

The unique aesthetics found in Metzker's prints are often accentuated by his choice of extreme high-key tones and deep blacks. This intentional contrast leaves audiences with striking shapes and patterns—evidence of Metzker's vision as he framed shots solely based on the interplay of light he perceived.

If you're interested in adding City Lux to your collection, it’s available from Beyond Words, a small independent bookstore in the UK. Managed by my friend Neil McIlwraith, Beyond Words is a treasure trove of photography literature, dedicated to highlighting the works of both established and emerging photographers. Browsing through their offerings can often lead to discovering remarkable artists and projects you may not have encountered otherwise.

As you consider purchasing this book, I encourage supporting independent bookstores like Beyond Words over larger platforms such as Amazon. Independent shops not only provide access to unique photography books but also foster communities that celebrate the art of photography. Investing in these stores contributes to a richer cultural landscape and ensures that diverse voices in photography continue to be heard.

In conclusion, City Lux by Ray Metzker is more than just a collection of photographs; it's an exploration of light, shadow, and urban life that is sure to inspire photographers at any level. Whether you're seeking to refine your technique or simply searching for inspiration, Metzker's distinctive approach will resonate. His fusion of street and abstract photography urges us to see our surroundings through a new lens, challenging us to discover beauty in the unseen and overlooked.
