Reflections on the Assynt Workshop Experience
After returning from another inspiring workshop in Assynt, where I’ve been coming since 2000, the experience continues to enrich both my teaching and the participants' photography journeys. This marks an impressive twenty-six years of exploration and growth in one of Scotland's most stunning landscapes.
Capturing the Beauty of Assynt
The weather during our week in Assynt was a mixed bag, but that only adds to the charm of landscape photography in this region. Each shift in light offers unique opportunities for capturing stunning images. Participants were encouraged to embrace the unpredictable conditions, which often yielded some of the best shots of the week.
The 'Review+Edit' Process
One of my hallmark practices during these workshops is the 'Review+Edit' session, which occurs in the hotel each morning after our sunrise shoot and breakfast. Equipped with a digital projector, we gather in a private room where we collaboratively analyze the previous day’s photographs.
Here’s how it typically unfolds: I provide constructive feedback on each participant's work while showcasing their images to highlight various editing techniques. My approach emphasizes not just improving individual images but understanding core concepts in composition and editing. This means that I do not aim for perfection on the first go; instead, I believe that effective editing requires time for the artist's eye to adjust. Being in a live editing session means my critique is immediate, which can be both exhilarating and challenging.
Teaching Composition and Movement
During our discussions, I often point out compositional elements that might not work and suggest alternatives, such as changing angles or locations. This experiential learning is critical in helping photographers understand the decisive moments in capturing great imagery. The idea is to cultivate a mindset that prioritizes learning over perfection. It's not uncommon for participants to feel a bit lost when their images don't align with their vision. However, I remind them that the goal isn't about editing by committee, especially in a group setting, but about grasping concepts and applying them to future work.
Assembling a Portfolio
As the week progresses, we dive deeper into the art of assembling a cohesive portfolio. One effective technique I’ve adopted is using a standout image as a reference point throughout the evaluation process. This helps highlight discrepancies in other images as we explore themes and styles together. By leveraging one central image, participants can begin to see the broader picture and how individual elements contribute to the overall effect of their work.
A Focus on Educational Growth
The ultimate goal of the workshop is education. My philosophy is not to manage the editing process with a fine-tooth comb but to guide photographers towards understanding their art on a deeper level. By doing this, we foster an environment where individuals can express their creativity without being hindered by the fear of making mistakes. The feedback I provide is less about judgments and more about exploring possibilities and fostering artistic growth.
Gratitude and Community
As I wrap up another workshop, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the participants. Each group brings unique perspectives and experiences that enrich our time together. The camaraderie developed during our shared experiences in Assynt and Ullapool is what makes these workshops memorable and fulfilling.
Participating in these workshops isn’t just about the day-to-day activities; it’s also about forming connections, inspiring one another, and fostering a community passionate about photography. Whether you're looking to enhance your compositional skills, improve your editing techniques, or simply engage with like-minded photographers, these sessions offer something for everyone interested in advancing their photography journey.
As I look forward to future workshops, I remain excited for the insights and creativity that each new group will bring with them. The love for Assynt and its breathtaking landscapes will always fuel my dedication to teaching and sharing knowledge with fellow photographers.
