Navigating Film Processing: Challenges and Solutions from an Enthusiast

Processing film at home has become a deeply rewarding endeavor for many photographers. This week, I’m tackling the challenge of processing 80 rolls of film, a task that brings excitement but also a few complications. In the past two to three years, since I began processing my own film, I’ve encountered various learning curves that highlight the intricacies of the craft.

Finding Satisfaction in the Process

One of the most satisfying aspects of developing my own film is having complete control over the entire workflow—from shooting to printing. The tactile experience of film processing creates a personal connection to the images produced, fostering a deeper appreciation for each step. However, not every aspect goes smoothly. One of the persistent issues I've faced is film curling, especially once the rolls are hung to dry on racks, as shown in the image above.

The curling appears to stem from the differing surfaces on either side of the film, which tend to dry at uneven rates. This week, I've implemented a humidifier in my drying area to combat this problem, hoping it will create a more consistent moisture level. Maintaining this balance is crucial, as it directly affects the quality and usability of the final prints.

Reflections on My Equipment

In my film processing journey, I purchased an Analogico Dev.a film processor, which seemed like a perfect fit at the time. Being one of the early adopters, I was aware that there could be some initial hiccups. As it turns out, the anticipated teething problems have manifested more than I anticipated. Yet, one bright spot has been Analogico's customer support, which has consistently provided timely and effective solutions whenever issues arose.

Over time, my processor has become a patchwork of custom fixes to address the breakdowns that have occurred. Each failure prompted me to develop a deeper understanding of the machine. It’s likely that when I eventually upgrade to a newer model, I’ll fondly reminisce about my first processor as a sort of learning prototype, filled with lessons learned through experience.

Processing Techniques and Solutions

When it comes to specific techniques, I’ve struggled with the development of E6 films using my current processor. Many in the community often share the sentiment that true inversion is key to achieving even development with E6 films. The classic method involves manually rotating the drum to ensure the developer makes complete contact with the film's surface. Unfortunately, my machine keeps the drum fixed in place on a spindle, which complicates this technique.

After adjusting the process as best I can, I am now satisfied with the results I’m achieving. It emphasizes the importance of experimentation and adaptation in film processing, as each setup may require its own unique method to optimize results.

Looking Ahead

As I continue to process these rolls this week, I’m reminded of how much there is to learn in this craft. Whether it’s finding ways to combat curling or troubleshooting technical issues with my processor, the journey is filled with continual growth. The challenges that once felt overwhelming have gradually transformed into educational opportunities, deepening my appreciation for the art of film photography.

Future improvements could include investing in more advanced equipment or researching additional techniques to enhance the drying process. As I reflect on my experiences, it’s clear that every challenge faced is also an opportunity for creative problem-solving, leaving the door wide open for further exploration in the world of film processing.

Through patience and persistence, I’ve found joy in mastering this skill, proving that there’s immense value in every roll developed—a testament to both the art form and the resilience of those who pursue it.
