Meet Joel Valkner, the Owner
Allow me to introduce Joel Valkner, the essence behind Electric Wizard Tattoo. Joel isn’t just an exceptional tattooer; he’s a facilitator of creativity and knowledge within the tattooing world. His dedication extends beyond merely providing tattoos; he has accumulated a rich collection of tattoo history which adds a unique charm to the shop.
While I may be biased, his clients will affirm that Electric Wizard Tattoo is a place where artistry meets care. All the artists prioritize quality and create works that receive admiration while ensuring that clients feel supported and valued throughout their tattoo journey. The environment is kept clean, professional, and inherently welcoming to everyone walking through the door.
The Heart of the Business
Tell us about your business and what you offer.
At Electric Wizard Tattoo, we pride ourselves on producing high-quality tattoos while forming a real connection with our clients. Tattooing is a labor of love, and I’ve been privileged to do it full-time for over twenty years. My dedication to the craft reflects in every tattoo, and I genuinely enjoy recognizing the art's value in both my practice and my clients’ lives.
How It All Began
What inspired you to start this business, and how did it come to life here in New Braunfels?
This venture marks my second tattoo shop; I previously sold my first location, which has thrived for 14 years. My motivation has always been to create an inspiring environment for both my clientele and myself. Working late, developing artwork, or simply spending time at the shop are all things I love. I wanted to cultivate a space where I could control the atmosphere and ensure it was free from the unpredictable challenges present in some other shops.
After relocating back to Texas in 2017, we sought to establish roots near family in a rapidly growing community. New Braunfels was at the brink of expansion, making it the perfect setting for my new chapter.
Building Community Connections
What do you love most about serving this community?
The strongest aspect of tattooing lies in its deeply personal connections, and I cherish the relationships built here. Every tattooing experience—whether large or small—offers an opportunity to bond with clients. Some return consistently, becoming lifelong friends. I still maintain contact with clients I haven’t tattooed in years, which truly embodies the concept of community.
To further strengthen these relationships, we organize events like “Tats for Tails,” partnering with the Humane Society. This initiative aims to foster goodwill in the mainstream while challenging the negative stereotypes often associated with tattoo culture. There's more to us than meets the eye; we’re just regular people who love our community.
Behind the Business: The Daily Grind
What’s something most people don’t see about running your business day-to-day?
Many aren’t aware of the inconsistencies tied to running a business, especially one like tattooing where artists often operate as contract workers. Paying a portion of earnings or booth rent creates an unpredictable income, compounded by the costs of rent, insurance, and supplies. The financial burden is particularly significant when bookkeeping comes to include personal expenses.
Taking a day off can feel impossible; any missed opportunity might affect the shop’s closing. While it can be rewarding, the pressure of ownership often leaves little room for self-care.
Values & Vision for the Future
What values guide your approach to your clients?
The foundation of my practice revolves around a strong work ethic, which is evident in the quality I strive to maintain. I'm currently working on adopting a more creative approach to my art—watching it evolve beyond the confines of strict formulas while still retaining that work ethic. I aim to experiment with different materials and styles; this evolution is necessary for growth as an artist.
